Here is the new MAPS from Microchip. It makes it a little easier to select a device for your next project. Just adjust the sliders to the parameters you want, and click a few buttons. It takes a bit of time to load all the flash at the beginning, but then it is pretty quick.

I cannot speak for all flavors of basic or C, the biggest difference is going to be your time. Assembly requires many times more lines of code to be written...
