Why should shipping be free?!!?! MELabs has to pay for it! Heck, at the minimum, if they want to send it UPS Ground in the USA, they have to pay for a box (which costs over $1, and UPS charges almost 2!) and they have to pay for the shipping fee, too.

If you think you can make enough of these to cover the cost of your time, then make them and sell them. I think you'll find you spend plenty of time and effort with zero payback. We are fortunate that MELabs offers this service! Otherwise we'd be stuck buying the $30 soic adaptor, paying digikey $9 for shipping, and then designing our own board and paying the board house.
