Just occurred to me I could simply buy a so to dip adapter and use it in the 40 pin dip that the programmer already has.

What are you trying to do?
What exactly are you trying to program with the socket? I have designed many PIC boards in the past maybe one of my designs may fit your needs.... What processor are you working with?
