MCU mart has an Melabs soic adapter for 49.95 which I can kinda live with...but the 9 bucks for shipping to Indiana doesn't make sense. (should be free shipping...c'mon!)
Seems like a lot of money for this thing.
Are there any other options?
Have the MELABS programmer......maybe I can do the board myself and buy the socket?
Having bought a couple of ZIF SOIC sockets so I could test programmed PICs I can tell you that you'll likely pay about $20 plus shipping for just a ZIF socket.
Just occurred to me I could simply buy a so to dip adapter and use it in the 40 pin dip that the programmer already has.

What exactly are you trying to program with the socket? I have designed many PIC boards in the past maybe one of my designs may fit your needs.... What processor are you working with?
You could make your own. Digikey sells the soic adaptor (sans board) for about $30. Etch yourself a board and add a header, and you've saved $20.Quote:

They are basically zif for soic chips... not DIP, and not a solder-on board. You use these to program your SOIC chip prior to putting it on a pcb.
Why should shipping be free?!!?! MELabs has to pay for it! Heck, at the minimum, if they want to send it UPS Ground in the USA, they have to pay for a box (which costs over $1, and UPS charges almost 2!) and they have to pay for the shipping fee, too.Quote:
