If you are cutting straight lines.
Mark off with a pencil on both sides, then using a craft knife with a fairly strong blade score the board along both sides(use a metal rule for a guide). Then snap along the scored line, a quick buff down with a small file or some emery. Quick easy and cheap, this has worked for me for the past thirtysomething years. Just watch your fingers with the knife.
