    Exclamation Spam Spam Spam

OK everyone, I think we're in for a "bumpy" ride.

The "LOW LIFE's" have released their latest version of the vBulletin forum spammer.

They will start out as "Bump it up" posts.
But they will accelerate to full on "NASTY SPAM".

Please be carefull what you Click On.

These programs have been developed to circumvent the latest forum registration pages. They can read those pictures, that you have to type the corresponding letters. You know, the ones that take a normal person 4 or 5 times to get right.

It will take an update to vBulletin before it goes away.

P.S. ... Don't reply to them. (Please). It only makes them harder to find and delete.

    Regards,
    DT

    Smile the invaders

    Hi Darrel,

Just do your best with the tools you have to work with.
You guys have done a great job so far.
We can put up with any infiltration from the dastardly Acursed Spammers, till the tools catch up with the invaders.

I've deleted 11 posts and over 2 dozen new registrations - that's just in the last six hours today...

    Good...
Curious...Do you also put a sort of I. P. lockout (not 100% sure what that's called exactly) when you get a spammer? Or do they all spoof anyways so that chances of actually nailing down the source is nill...

At the moment I'm just Deleting posts and the User. I don't think any of us Admins have the time to do any more than that... we all got jobs, lives etc... Either new Registrations have to be suspended for a while, or, approved by Admin before they would be able to post. Personally, I'd not approve anyone with a hotmail (or gmail - big culprit) account, but that's not a decision for me...

    Agree'd...
I don't think I've ever seen those posts around here for more than 1/2 hour...at the most...anyways. Tells me that you're on the ball regardless of what time it is.

You guys are busy today (1Oct08) eh? Nothing but spammers registering all day...

If those updates cost money, I'm very suspicious about who is behind it. Nobody in this world does anything without reason. I'm having trouble swallowing the notion of "Cyberpunks" (bunch of immature twits looking for attention) -- being responsible.

Think about it, just how informed would these people need to be in order to do what they're doing? They're professional programmers with, at very least, inside information relating to the system.

Writing character recognition software for all those pictures would be a tedious, time-consuming exercise.

    *Skills required to do that?

    - Application programming
    - Subclassing
    - DIB knowledge
    - Mathematics expert

    *Who could have done this?

    - Cyberpunk
    - vBulletin

    *Why would they do this?

    - For profit
    - Attention
    - Immaturity
    - Insanity

That's the best analysis / argument I can come up with at the moment.

Hope it helps you solve the problem.

    Really?
They must have been because I could not do it with my skill level.

Disbelievers! If Spongebob and Patrick can light a campfire at Bikini Bottom, anything is possible.

Don't worry Jeremy, you're not a suspect in this one.

But ummm, anyone who is a %$^& and has a proven aptitude in the aforementioned criteria is. So, I guess this probably narrows it right down (at least I like to think it does)
