You are right Maxim and Linear Technology have a large selection of charging controller chips.
I do not have the time to build and manufacture my own so I must find a source.

Sparkfun!! Sparkfun!! Here is a 5-12V charger and a 3.7-7V charger. They have a lot of useful little things like this.

I did search Sparkfun but found only the second option which does not meet the current requirement (minimum 1A).
