    Default Controlling LCD contrast?

I am looking at making a small circuit that will be used with other circuits and uses an LCD to display different settings. I am planning on using the PIC16F687, or 689, or 690. Currently my design just uses a pot to adjust the voltage for the LCD module to control the contrast. I looked a different design and the contrast appears to be controlled by a PWM signal. I have looked through the datasheet for the 687, 689, 690 and found that the 690 has a PWM hardware unit. It is best to just use the chip with the PWM hardware to make a PWM signal to control the contrast of the LCD. If anyone has any hints or tips I would appreciate them. Thanks for the help.

I also wanted to add an auto shutdown feature to my controller. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be a good method for developing an auto shutdown? Thanks.
