Remote communication

What type of communications, and what data rate? Is it just a remote control of a garage door, or text messaging?

initially I am sending text messaging beween 2 PICs using serout and serin with 1200 baud rate. It was successful when i use direct connection. However how can do it over telephone line for remote place ? From here, may be i can use it to monitor my parent's house such as invader alarm as well as controlling the porch light.
