Jaycar Electronics also sell a small selection of 8-bit pic's that you can buy over the counter for cash
I buy all of my components from ebay at a fraction of the cost of "reputable" suppliers - often the total price on ebay is less than the p&p from the other. I'm a tinkerer so cost is an issue but time is not. Most ebay sellers, particularly the ones in China, are so desparate to retain their positive feedback that they will refund small sums "at the drop of a hat". Most give free p&p, so spread your order around and don't spend too much with one. As to the fakes comment, most of the stuff I buy is so cheap, it's hardly worth faking. For instance I just bought a DS3231 on a board (with a AT24C32 as well) for £0.99 with free p&p and I'll bet you all the money in my pocket that if it doesn't work, I'll get a refund and won't be required to return the defective back.
@OldMarty That is contempt prior to investigation or you're just unlucky.

Regarding fake PICs from chinese ebay sellers (amongst all the other IC's and transistors they mass produce without dies inside)
It's not such a big deal to lose the money as long as they're small purchases, i'm only intending to buy $20-$30 worth of chips, which can be 10-20 chips as opposed to some ebay resellers that demand $15-$30 per chip.
While i may lose some $$ receiving fake chips, other than the disapointment of losing a few $$$, it's the simple fact that i still have no chips to play with., so i achieved nothing.
Jaycar don't sell modern pics, they're still selling 16F84's from 20 years ago lol
Anyhoo, onwards & upwards.
I realy wouldn't get hung up, just keep each purchase small. Try tayda2009 they don't carry a large range of PISs but they are quick and cheap.

I was under the impression that you had to "connect" a some sort of credit/debet card to your Paypal account but that's apparently wrong. Anyway, have you checked if Mouser and/or Digikey offers a Paypal option?
