Since you need only 3 digits, it might be less time consuming to make your own, using as many hi brightness leds as you deem needed. Shading the display helps a lot too, either by using a hood over it or by recessing the display from its bezel surface.
Medium Density Fiber Board (MDF) is readily available, cheap, easy to machine.
It's what a lot of sign makers use, If you do not wish to fabricate it a sign company could do that for you, and in fact might be a good resource for commercial displays.
And now I am thinking they might "sponsor" your effort for putting their logo on the back, or even your employer might.
