This links to a very annoying problem with the 16F88 chips. I have yet to try the solution mentioned but i certainly have a few locked chips that my programmer won't recognise!!

Always wear safety glasses while programming.
I had that problem a year or so back, as I remember I was able to program with a PICKIT2 by starting the PICKIT2 software and program without a hex file to unlock.
If you do not believe in MAGIC, Consider how currency has value simply by printing it, and is then traded for real assets.

I managed to unlock all my pics but had to redesign my pcb to leave MCLR enabled which cures the problem. It's a bugger if you get caught by it though.
