Jerson, things didnt quite work out; restored a 4 month old Acronis image, incremental backup data as of a week back, and now its good to go.

maybe "run as win 98" option was checked?

Yes, I did try the compatibility mode, though it did not help.

Anyway, the formatting was something long overdue, it got rid of all the deadwood accumulated over a long time and the PC's running a lot better.
