Have I lost touch ?

Hi.
This is a double question relating to Hardware and Software and didn't realy know where else to post.

It's been a while since i have played PicBasic (about 10 years) and in the process of blowing the dust of what i had been useing and wondering how out of date it is.

Programming device is a 1994 J. Morrison PICPROG
&
PicBasic Pro (version unknown as i cannot find the manual as yet) but 1998 is on the floppy.

At the time i was solely useing 16f84's and had very few problems with the setup.

Anyway I now have a project which requires a PIC interface and whilst i still have a dozen or so 16f84's what else is new out there that will run with the above setup or do i need to upgrade.

Browsing the web seems to indicate the demise of the 16f84, if so whats a good replacment.

Well, frankly if the 16F84 worked for you back then, no reason it shouldn't work for you now.
Yes, there are newer, bigger, better, faster, stronger, longer, PICs out there, but if you don't need those options, then you don't need those options...But, check the 16F628A, 16F88. There was a thread a few weeks ago talking about what various people like to have in their 'toolbox'.
My personal current favorites are the 10F222 (6 pin), 12F683 (8 pin), 16F887 (40 pin 16F series), 18F4685 (40 pin 18F series), 18F1320 (18 pin 18F series), 18F2585 (28 pin 18F series), 18F4550 (40 pin 18F series with USB), 18F2550 (28 pin 18F series with USB) and a few others.

PBP circa 1998 is about the same time I bought my first version of PBP, which likely puts it around PBP 2.42 range. Check the MeLabs website for the updates.

Oh... I make it earlier than that...

2.42 came along in 2002
2.40 was 2001
2.32 was 2000

And that's all that we have in our archives...

Thanks for the info. Looks like i am stuck with what i have for the time being with all these
goodies added to the newer chips.
Most of what i have played with was serial data orientated GPS NMEA and whilst browsing
the forum i noticed that Skimask has moreless beaten me to my next project, OBD data although
i had not even considered a Nokia display for the output, that is kewl.

I am still hunting down the elusive PBP manual

In the PBP directory,there should be a ReadMe. The version number can be found there.
