Placing a regular resistor in parallel (or series) with a thermistor

Series:
... the thermistor is placed in series with a standard 1% resistor
... the series thermistor system responds to temperature in a linear manner over a limited temperature range.
The linearization resistor’s value should be equal to magnitude of the thermistor at the mid-point of the temperature range of interest.

Parallel:
... typically used in system feedback loops
Once again, the optimum linearity response of this resistive network is obtained at the point where the thermistor resistance and [the parallel resistor] are equal.
