Multi Voltage DC Power Supply
Hi, I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to give me a hand making a power supply for a project I am working on.
I am not very good at power supply design so any help would be greatly appreciated.
The power supply needs to output the following voltages.
V1 - 12v @ 5A
V2 - 5.3v @ 3.6A
V3 - 18v @ 0.8A
V4 - 5.2v Standby @0.075A

Would it be ok to build a circuit with a bunch of LM317/LM338 adjustable voltage regulators to do this?

Linear regulators are ok but wasteful of energy (heat) and often fairly large due to heatsink requirements and the use of standard iron-cored transformers (yours is some 120W, conservatively and the transformer would be appreciatively large). Switched-mode regulators are available that have adjustable output voltages. You might consider a small SMPS PC power unit - more so if you can trace the output circuitry to isolate the neutral (negative) lines whereby the 12V and 5V outputs could be wired in series to give you the 'nominal' 18V required.
I am assuming the voltages you've specified are of the usual +/- 10% requirements?

If I was to use a Laptop AC adapter rated at around 150W at 18v, would this be sufficient to drive the voltage regulators and provide the power I require?

Are you planning to control the output voltage with a PIC ? or it is just an analog and manual traditional regulator ?

too much heat disipation with that, the 12v alone would be almost 50 watts,
look at an older PC computer power supply, has a bunch of outputs and may (?) be slightly adjustable.
