3x4 Keypad schematic questions

Help!!!
I'm doing a project for fun and just learning PicBasic Pro. I am messing around with a keypad and how to hook it up to a 16F877A IC. Right now i have each button on keypad tied to a individual port. As i look around i notice no one else is doing it this way. Looks like col/row thing is used. If i try this method how do i connect the keypad? I have seen the schematics and still a little confused. Would pin for button * be for col0, pin for button 0 be for col1 and so on?
