Hi

I am looking to buy an new laptop in the next week or two. Ideally I want it to have a serial port, but, as usual, the ones I want to buy dont have serial ports. I really dont want to choose a laptop im not entirely happy with just because it has a serial port.

I only need the serial port for Data logging functions for projcts I work on where data is sent from the PIC to the laptop.

I have no experience doing this using USB. I think there is USB to Serial converters but not sure if they work 100%.

Can anyone advise or give me any tips?

Thanks

Tony

I can understand your feeling about USB and Serials, but since you can use the FT232RL device and give your PIC USB capability, there is nothing to worry about. Think your customer too, if you are going to sell your product. You are giving a USB featured product even if you are doing only RS232 in reality!

I use a Keyspan USB converter. it works great with a Pic even at 3 volts. Also I can use a serial receipt printer with my laptop/s But a JDM programmer will not work.
