hello
i beleve there are small uniits/ chips which can be connected to a PIC which can dial up a mobile phone - does any one know where i can obtain one of these from as i am currently having difficulty finding such devices

Go to the GSM section. Bunches of threads there on how to interface with cell phones.
A search using the keyword 'dialing' brings up a few decent hits too.

Nothing special needed. Connect to the serial port of the phone with an appropriate level converter and just send ascii AT commands, like ATD1234567890.

Now I don't remember if a semi colon is needed for data calls. I think is for voice call.

But this is the general idea.

Rest is directly related to the hardware you are using both ways.
