Yes, it's that time of year again. This year has well & truly flown for me, feels like I celebrated Christmas only a month ago. My Grandmother arrived today, just as she always has this time of year for the past 30 odd. I'm certain shes going to make it to 100, she's 85yrs old and has better health & more sanity than a lot of people half her age. Anyhow, one of the first things she asked me today was: what is science exactly?, in my day we were never taught it. The first thought that popped into my mind was - what's a one sentence definition for it?

Science is a very powerful tool that aids us with understanding the world.

Science is a broad field and can be used to explain why, when, what & how things are the way they are. Psychology is an area of science. Criminal psychologists use science as a powerful tool to help solve cases. I'm not just talking about physical evidence here, such as DNA or blood stains on the perpetrator's carpet. Psychologists can analyze a person's words and often come to a sound conclusion as to whether or not this person is a murderer, rapist, or even a bloody pedophile. This is all done through profiling a person. Anyhow, enough of my ramblings.

Merry Christmas everyone, may 2008 be a safe & prosperous new year for you all!

Hi Trent,

"Profiling" is not so far from the Nazi Racial Science.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you!

I have two different interpretations for that ...

1. Profiling someone isn't an easy thing to do, much like trying to comprehend Adolf Hitler's insane line of thought.

2. Profiling someone in the real world can be very cruel, much like Hitler was to his people.

I've got one interpretation for that...

'Lighten up Francis'...

(hint: think Bill Murray, John Candy, 1981, etc., if I need to go on...nevermind, don't worry about it)

And contrary to popular belief...I'd like to wish everybody out there a well holiday season.

May the datasheet you require be the first hit on a Google search.

Hey Skimask.

Did you knit that yourself?:)

Hey Skimask.
Did you knit that yourself?:)

I couldn't weave a good tale if I tried...which I haven't...lately...
I'll wait until the 31st/1st...then I'll be weaving all over the place! :D
Besides that...believe it or not, I just got braces on (ok, I'm only about 25 years behind the power curve here), tops back in July, bottoms 11 days ago. I can just imagine getting my teeth caught up in that, then trying to unscramble that. I feel like a 12 year old.
I think I'll hook up some wires to 'em, suck on a lemon and see if I can make enough power to run a PIC...

And the power supply problem is solved.
Molar = 28 volts
Eye tooth = 5
Upper = positive rail.
Lower = negative rail.
But where is 0 ?
:D

Hi Trent,

Obsolete "scientific" theories:

Profiling someone can lead to completely wrong conclusions.

The tools used to profile someone could one day turn out to be
completely wrong or completely inadequate.

Best regards,

Luciano

Particularly when it's personal

I'm terribly sorry for this thread, the content is obviously the last thing most people would care to read, particularly this time of year. So I do sincerely apologize, I should stop and think a bit more before I post. Planning to take some timeout and just sit back and listen (read actually) for a while.

Once again -- sorry.

Trent,

I do not think you should be. How would you have known that sharing a little about you and your Grandmother would have went the direction it did?

Maybe people do not want to think about the things that came up, now or any other time of the year. Does that mean that we should not think about it, or by not thinking about it some how it did not happen or will not happen again.

The profiling issue does seem to be a problem on the rise once again. Basically I think it is human nature.

What better way to make sure that it does not get out of hand again than to have discussions about it. Now or any other time of the year. Luciano brought up a good point. Reminding all about the problems of profiling.

What better time of year than now, what ever your beliefs, when most people are wishing one another good will, to talk about some thing like this? Hiding your head in the sand never solved anything.

Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, what ever the case may be.

Judging / sizing up a person is human nature, but God help us if profiling ever becomes one.

When you get your profile done, the people doing it seek to learn everything about you which ranges from knowing your bank account pin number right through to what time of day you usually take a shower or use the toilet. In the process, you'll get the crap beaten out of you, to see if you become violent when provoked (they'll drug you up on truth syrup during this) Then they'll throw you in front of a TV that they have full control over the content with, monitor your reactions to what you see and hear before trying to really push you over the edge by extinguishing a cigarette on you (once again, a test to see if this person can be made to be violent)

As Luciano pointed out -- Nazi racial science is a justifiable comparison.
