I have the Melabs USB programmer and I am trying to program a

PIC18F4550-I/P

I keep getting the error target device does not match selected device. I have the PIC18F4550 selected from the full down menu. I am not sure if the -I/P makes a difference? I checked the troubleshooting section on the melabs site. They said just to make sure I had the right chip selected...I do, check the power in the board for 5V, I did, and I am getting 5 volts. And to make sure the chip is seated right, I think it is, doesn't look like I can screw that up too much.

This is the first PIC I have ever tried to program. I an new to PICs but not electronics or programming.

I have several PIC18F4550 and 18F4450 and have gotton the same error with each.

Anyone know what may be going on? Does the Melabs programmer use a special USB cable? I am using a USB cable that I baught for my printer, but is is just a basic USB 2 cable.

Any help will be appreciated.

thanks,

mw

I don't have this programmer but do you have an option to disable the 'device ID check' before programming? If so disable it an post your results.

I had the connector to the programmer in the wrong spot. There is a spot for an exspansion board, and the connection to the programmer, they look the same, and I connected to the wrong one. Stupid mistake.

Thanks for helping anyway, I appreciate it. Your tips led me to the problem.

I kept getting this message too, but on the serial programmer. Make SURE your RB7 line (or whatever the ICSP connection is) doesn't have other hardware connected to it. That was my problem.
