Hi,

I need to use a low cost mini printer mechanism in one of my project. My local market provided me an EPSON Model - 42V printer for about $15(INR Rs.650). It has got 3 daisy wheels for printer. One motor and an encoder strip to provide some positioning and timing signals. (I could figure out this much) Googling for it I did not find any datasheet or application notes. Seems a pretty obsolete one. Following is what I have with me:

1 - trigger magnet -
2 - trigger magnet +
3 - motor +
4 - motor -
5 - timing signal T ---
6 - reset signal R ---
7 - common for 5,6,8
8 - Timing sub signal t

Any help or suggestion ( for any other printer aswell ) on how to play with it would be of great help to me. The mentioned printer is widely used in Telephone Call Monitor devices in the local market. I really do not have the scope and time to reverse engineer.

Looks like you got yourself a calculator printer. I have used this printer many moons ago and may still have some data. If you still cannot find anything, let me know, I will search if the data is still there.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply jerson. Actually the cost was an important factor. And the Kolkata market is not so smart to provide alternatives. So I had to settle for this. So if you have the datasheet please upload.

Hi Sougata

I have located the data sheet. Unfortunately, it is 25 pages. I will upload the images maybe tomorrow.

Hi Everybody,

Jerson was kind enough scan the pages of the old datasheet and send it to me. I can the same should anybody else need it. It is around 4.2Mb and cannot be uploaded here. Thanks Jerson for sharing and thanks to the forum to make it actually happen.

Hi Roshan,

Sorry for the late reply. The scans from Jerson was from old paper. It proved very useful though and I thank Jerson once again for the help. I have cleaned them a little bit. But still they are of big size. I tried to convert it into pdf. But due to poor quality OCR did not work. I would try to FTP it but going through very tight schedule. The code is not complete too. When finished I would post it here. By the way the timing diagrams are not much readable. Send me a PM after 29th SEP with your postal address, I would try to courrier the Hard Copy.

Hi,

The previous upload has been deleted so here is the new link http://rapidshare.com/files/23526925/Epson_M42-V_.pdf . Please note that the size of the file is close to 8.6 MB and sending by email is not permitted on my account. It is a pdf with the scanned document Jerson. Don't forget to thank Jerson.

sougata,

It looks like that site deletes the file after 90 days for the free accounts.

If you want, I can put in on my website, where it'll stay.
Seems more people may want it in the future.

Dear Priya,

As I write these the datasheet is being mailed to you. (My broadband upload speed sucks!).

Darrel I think it is a good idea to have it on your website thus I am again uploading it to rapidshare and posting the link. http://rapidshare.com/files/76897214/Epson_M42-V.pdf
I lost the code (and a lot other) when my 250gb Seagate was fried. I keep backups but do not really have a good incremental backup tool, (no free backup tool that I could locate) so things are really messed up. All I can remember is that I did some filtering on the signals from printer using R-C network followed by a Schmitt trigger. Also I remember that sometimes the count was wrong so instead of printing too fast I was printing then grabbing pulses and printing again. For experimental purposes I used PWM channels for both the motor drive and the solenoid but did not actually use them. Driver used was a ULN2803 with outputs paralleled. (4 for the motor/ 4 for the solenoid)

You should look at abakt (http://www.xs4all.nl/~edienske/abakt/). I use this for my backups. Very nice tool. Can do incremental, differential, full backups and is *Free*

Hi Jerson,

I will surely try that. But sad to know that the developer has stopped working on the project.

Hello everybody.

My name is Ricardo, I'm from germany and I've got a problem with purchasing the 42-V.
Has anyone of you an idea where to get it? I've searched everywhere but found nothing. Maybe anyone has left over one.

Thanks for your help.

Priya

Tell us what you have done till now to interface the printer. If you run into some trouble with what you have, you can get help. But, you need to have done at least some preliminary work.

Yes Sougata, I have interfaced this printer with 8051 :)

hi. jerson sir,

i am rilesh , a student of B.E> Entc and i wanted to use epson 42
v printer for my project which is similar to something used for
ticketing purpose in bus transport. i want it 4 printing recepts.

i hav got the datasheet of it. thanks to u 4 that. i am using avr
microcontroller and want to interface the printer to it. i just want to
know how the character selection is done and the tips regarding its
programing with microcontroller. i hav got some idea regarding driving motor
and the magnet, but bit counfused regarding selection of charcters.
Some example of code would be a great help.

if u could send me some data regarding this then it would be a great
help! my email id is

thanks once again for datasheets. i could get that only because of
u.bye. hav a nice day!

hi jerson sir,
i hav got ur reply. thanks for showing the interest in helping me.

as i hav told u earlier i hav got the driver circuit that drives the motor and the permanent magnet. but i am not finding any data on the remaining signals like
1. T
2. rst
3 . common(c)
4. t

if u could send me some data regarding how this signals can be used it will be a great help.

mail me on my id:

Rilesh

Again, if you have done some coding, show it. We can guide you.

As far as the signals you mentioned, RST tells you when the wheels are at 0 position. First character on the wheels. The T (timing) pulses tell you when the wheel has advanced 1 character. This is from memory, I have not consulted the datasheet.

We could discuss your problems here since a forum exists for everyone to benefit. Today, its you who have a problem. Tomorrow, someone else who has the same problem will find the solution right here; whereas with email, the same questions will repeat.

hello sir,

i want to know weather its possible to print the characters by using epson 42 v and abt driving it by using atmega32 microcontroller. i hav written the code using code vision . the code is as follows.

#include<mega32.h>
#include<delay.h>
// timing signal T on portD-0
//reset pulse on portD-1
//triger magnet driving pulse on portD-2
int i;
void timing(void);
void reset(void);
void magnet(void);
void main()
{
while(1)
{
for(i=0;i<8;i++)
{
timing();
}
reset();

magnet();
}
}
void timing(void)
{
DDRD=0xff;
PORTD=0x01;
delay_ms(1);
PORTD=0x00;;
delay_ms(1);

}
void reset(void)
{
DDRD=0xff;
PORTD=0x02;
delay_ms(1);
PORTD=0x00; // a single reset pulse on pin pd.1
delay_ms(1);
}
void magnet(void)
{
DDRD=0xff;
PORTD=0x05;
delay_ms(1);
PORTD=0x04; //timing pulse on pd.0 gets low after 1ms
delay_us(500); // magnet pulse gets low on pd.2 after 1.5 ms
PORTD=0x00;
delay_ms(1);
}

i want to know weather motor needs the pulses or a continuous 5v supply.

U hav done the project so u would hav exact knowledge of the timings. so i sincerely request u to post some data or to mail me that on my Id

I have already posted the datasheet for you and others. See this http://www.picbasic.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=47816&postcount=14

The datasheet is the complete document you would need to interface the mechanism.

Good luck
