rf encoder/decoder

Hi,
I was just wondering what an encoder/decoder does and if you can bypass this and take the serial in from an RF module straight into a PIC microcontroller? a link to a website about encoder/decoder would be great.

Use a PIC and send serial data (like rs232 link) but with manchester encoding/decoding scheme.

On the Receiver side again the same.
