Hi,
I just had a play with a Velleman minikit KM158 LCD message display. This is a 1x16 backlit LCD with a PIC16F630, 5V regulator, RS232 RX interface and 4 push button switches that comes with a nice moulded case with a swivel stand.
Best of all it costs less than £20 from Maplin in the UK. It's main function is as a scrolling message display but it also has a serial display function preprogrammed. It's an ideal kit for a professional (if you stick your own label over the "Velleman" moulded in the case) looking disply module. You can of course put your own program in a 'F630 to run it, or even change it to a 2x16 display.
Given the cost of cases and the difficulty in finding a nice one for an LCD, this is a bargain.
