Driving a SmartDisplay? (NKK)

Does anyone have experience driving a SmartDisplay? Data is sent by SPI so the shiftout commands should work for that. My only concern is displaying text. Would you have to create a font table for every character or is it as simple as sending ascii? Here is the datasheet:
