Remote communication

Hi,
i would like to connect 2 PIC remotely from my house to my parent's house which apart around 1km away. how can i do it with the use of modem. can anybody suggest the code to use to communicate wwith a modem ?

What type of communications, and what data rate? Is it just a remote control of a garage door, or text messaging?

initially I am sending text messaging beween 2 PICs using serout and serin with 1200 baud rate. It was successful when i use direct connection. However how can do it over telephone line for remote place ? From here, may be i can use it to monitor my parent's house such as invader alarm as well as controlling the porch light.
