Default recording sound to an IC

hi guys.. have no idea where this post should be so thought it'd better be in the off topic then later move to schematics. have you ever gone into one of those gift shops and find a birthday card that allows you to record 10-12secs of your voice to personalise the card. i saw one recently and that really got me thinking, what if i could do one of my own and started investigatin on the net and posting a thought here. Does anyone know what type of IC they use for this and also which IC can be used to store a melody (would u say its a midi file?) like those birthday cards with the birthday song when you open it. thoughts and feedback would be much appreciated

The AVR335 is an application note how to build a Digital Sound Recorder
with a microcontroller and a flash memory.
