Default Non standard, 160 char LCD text displays, SPLC780 controller, anyone?

    Hello.

Most LCD displays based on Hitachi controller clones, have maximum 80 characters to display - the biggest one so far being 20 chars X 4 lines. However, I've found a bigger ones, for example, this one has 40 chars X 4 lines, which means 160 chars. https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=14796013100 It is based on SPLC780C compatible controller. Quick lookup on datasheet appears that it should be compatible with Hitachi controller, (but display pinout itself is different), therefore we can use it with PBP using standard LCDOUT routines. Any ideas on that?

(Personally I'd prefer 20 chars x 8 lines display, but can't find such one yet)

That is too much money for that type of display, if you ask me. For that money you can have 7" display with touch, animation, etc...
Just recently looked up nextion displays(https://nextion.itead.cc/nextion-shop/). One big thing for me, is that they have display emulator. So you can connect PIC to PC, and develop display. Then just swap PC with real display...

Prices there are in Chinese yuan, and that 40X4 display costs less than $10

HD44780 based 40x4 LCD does exist. The thing is that it has TWO controllers and therefor TWO enable lines. The two top lines is driven by the first controller chip and the two bottom lines are driven by the second controller. This seems to be the case for display in the supplied link as well.

As you know, the pin assignment for the LCDOUT command is DEFINEd at compile time so you can't easily change it at runtime (to access the second controller chip). But you can of course implement an external switch that switches the PICs enable output to either one of the two controllers respective enable inputs. It'll be up to you (and not the LCDOUT command) to switch between the two halves of the display.

Finally, it is possible that Darrels "hijack routines" could be used to drive two enable lines directly but I've never used those. Might be worth looking into.

What if we use Configurable logical cells available in some PICs, to switch enable lines on the fly?

wow that is also nice idea, to use tri stated output to steer pins

Oh by the way, chinese have much more interesting controllers - one in which you can replace complete charset, not only 8 characters as in Hitachi's case...

Oh and if there are two controller chips, this means we can have not 8, but 16 total user definable characters? (each one in it's screen half) ?

I’ve had a 40x4 LCD for a few years, and it does work just the same.
Every pin is the same except it has two seperate Enable pins.

So Darrel's method will work for it?

Excellent, will order it next week and give it a try. Too bad they don't make it into 20 chars x 8 lines type....

There are cheap graphics TFT with touch and are serially controlled. If you need more info to display check out the Nextion displays.

Used them for some experiments seems you can do magic with them.

Have a look here too: http://www.picbasic.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=24147

Thanks, checked it. Even downloaded their IDE. Too monstrous, bad direct sunlight visibility, not mentioning just to display "123" on screen, you have to create an array I'll pass
