Default Solution for 4 wire plug .. anyone ??

    HI,
I am making a few boxed circuit. I am thinking of using a telephone
jack so I can communicate between two boxes ( I need 4 wires) Until
now it was good, telephone jacks are popular so they are fairly cheap.
The problem is that I do not have any square bits that fits on my
    drills
I mean puncturing a square on the side of a plastic box is time
consuming Vs round. Especially if you are about to do 50+.
Anybody have a trick to make fast and almost perfect square. Or even
a round connector would be better, but I could not find any under 2$,
    Its only for communication purposes,
    Thanks

Hmmm, that's a tough one . The only thing that I can think of is investing in a cheap CNC machine. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.

Make a stainless steel plate that has the square hole for the connector. Fix this plate to the plastic box. A few seconds with a Dremel hand tool and the material that once was a wall (side of the box) is now on the floor.

    Quick and easy to repeat.

How soft is the pastic? If it's soft plastic and you have a drill press, then a mortising attachment may work (even though it says "for wood use only").

How about a computer PS2 connector? Those are cheap and plentiful...

Since you are doing 50, one of these might help: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...knockout+punch

Not terribly cheap, but all you do is drill a round hole and you get a perfect square.

    Hi Lerameur!
The solution ready depends upon how your box is configured. If the circuit board or electronics are mounted on a/the flat lid then you could use a "nibbler" to create a square "slot" in the edge of the box. There is also a 90 degree punch (#81652 or #82394) from Micromark (www.micromark.com). Best, Ed

A 5 pin miniDIN connector would fit the bill pretty well. Only a $1.08 from mosuer. Here is a data sheet link:

    HI,

the 5 pin mini din is still a square.. but I really like that square punch from Ramius, It seems to be similar to a mortiser bit but is good for plastic, thanks

Yes, the minidin sockets have a square body but you mount them just behind the panel and have a round hole for the plug to go through.
