home brew game console W interface

[PICMAN]

i would like to begin creation of a console with a few specialized buttons, and run it in games such as battle field 1942 ,. my hope is to use pic to read keys, and interface similar to a joystick, ( while using another actual joystick)

any sugested refrences, ideas, to my knowledge the game just needs to relize the buton is presed and will auto set it, id like aprox 8 to 15 keys more or less on conpatibility and ease
