fatal: out of memory (pbpw) error

I am using MCSPLus 3.0.0.5, PBP 2.47 under Windows XP.

The installation paths have been c:\picstuff\mcsplus\codestudio.exe and c:\picstuff\pbp247\pbpw.exe. I keep the data (.pbp) files in ...my documents\basic_projects.

All was well till yesterday. Then, since yesterday, I have started getting a fatal: out of memory (pbpw) error.

After some googling I found that this is usually associated with long path names; so, I reinstalled/relocated all 3 above to the root, but that didnt help. Running pbpw.exe in Win98 compatibility mode was another suugestion I came across, didnt help either.

I have made no changes to my system these past few days, so I just cannot figure out whats causing this.

Anybody out there who's been through something similar?

Are you sure your PC hasn't caught a virus? That can explain a lot. If you're wondering, no, I haven't seen this error before. The Conficker virus seems to be a pain; it travels via the pen drive. I've been getting infected quite regularly by this trojan of late

Hi Jerson, thanks for the fast response!

Even as I type this, I am scanning my work PC; although I havent seen any suspicious activity other than the PBP issue (and I have an up-to-date AVG installed) that is what I felt too.

Thanks for the information on Conficker; Are there any specific tools for Conficker? Come to think of it, I did use a pendrive thats been going around.

If you have a LiveCD for any linux, use that or use a bootable CD to boot clean into your system. I use a LiveCD of Puppy Linux for this. Then look for a folder called "RECYLCER" in the C drive and every other partition and remove them. The Windows trash can is called RECYCLED - note the difference. Once you do this, go to sysinternals.com and download their utility called AutoRuns.EXE and fix any file not found entries pointing to the RECYCLER folder. Your system should be clean now. Also, you should update the policies on your machine to disable autoruns from removable storage devices. This you can do by 'Start-Run-gpedit.msc' Unless you are careful, you can mess up your system.

I have Bart's boot Cd; I'll try with that.

Till then, I I downloaded Microsoft's Windows Malicious Software removal tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en, but that gave my PC a clean chit.

Also, the AVG completed its scan; seems clea, again.

Jerson, things didnt quite work out; restored a 4 month old Acronis image, incremental backup data as of a week back, and now its good to go.

Yes, I did try the compatibility mode, though it did not help.

Anyway, the formatting was something long overdue, it got rid of all the deadwood accumulated over a long time and the PC's running a lot better.
