Here is the latest business model from Microchip Direct:
They had the chips I wanted in stock and at normal prices so I loaded them to the cart and was ready for checkout until the extortion card fell. They wanted $33 for shipping a $47 order within the US. Looks Lead times are headed for 2024. Flushed that cart down the toilet. Am I missing something here?

They probably ship from Thailand, since that's where I usually get mine shipped from. Their HQ is Chandler, AZ, but MFG is overseas.

You are lucky to have localy Digikey, Mouser and other distributor.

For me it is only Mouser outside Europe that can ship to my locatiopn without having to pay high import taxes.

So, hope you find what you want in other e-places.

Just receive mail from Mouser for an back-order that was scheduled for Feb. 2023 that changed for July 2023...! No guarantee this will be kept.

I just noticed yesterday that I'm no longer qualified for free samples from Microchip. That sucks, I wouldn't mind paying the shipping.
