I just went to the parallax site and saw a sale of their USB scope.
AT $99.00 it seeems like a great deal.
it's listed under their daily deal but I think it will go through the weekend?
...
Do check out DipTrace.
They have a free version of 250 Pins
but if you send them an email they have a not for profit version which is 500 pins for free.

I know they have some examples for the lab X1 board and they may have it for others.

I have been bit the portD being parallel.
I believe you have to set the trisE register to control it.
I can't remember exactly but you may want to check it out.
