Newbie Help with DS1629 RTC

Hi
I have a sample DS1629 RTC and am at a loss to know where to start with reading or setting the time for it.
I did a search and found the reference to Mel's DS1307 code but have to confess it was hard reading for me and making changes to it resulted in a blank lcd after initially seeing my test messages. Can someone offer a helping hand to start me with the DS1629 please? I don't want it all done for me, just a gentle push to start so I can learn most of the I2c myself. The pdf data sheet isn't much help and I can't find sample code anywhere as a guide.
