I need to establish USB HID communication, and looks like EasyHID is the way to go. Is the PIC BASIC compiler sufficient, or is the PRO version needed?

You will need the PRO version.

The standard version is very limited in comparison to the PRO. The PRO version supports many additional functions, much wider variety of processors, and most notably it allows the end user to generate programs > 2KB
