View Full Version : A better Search tool for the Forum

WOW! 19 votes with a 5.0 average.
Beats any of my other threads. :rolleyes:

Well, in return, all I can do is try to make a "Better Search tool" ...

Using google's relatively new "Custom Search", even more Relevant results can be found.
Not only from this forum, but from many years of the original PICBASIC-L mailing list (I was there), as well as rentron.com and a few others.

Plunk in the chip ... "PIC16F877A" and it'll show a link to the datasheet too. (usually)

Give it a try ...<table border="1" width="600"><tbody><tr><td bgColor="#ffffa0" vAlign="top" cellpadding="16">Searching sites ...

<center>picbasic.co.uk/forum
melabs.com/resources
www.rentron.com
list.picbasic.com
and a few others
<form id="cse-search-box" action="http://www.google.com/cse"><input name="cx" value="003666103979926751653:z4kc9dx55he" type="hidden"><input name="ie" value="UTF-8" type="hidden"><input style='background: url("http://www.google.com/cse/intl/en/images/google_custom_search_watermark.gif") no-repeat left rgb(255, 255, 255); padding: 2px; border: 1px solid rgb(126, 157, 185);' name="q" size="31" type="text"><input name="sa" value="Search" type="submit"></form>
</center></td><td align="center">Add this search engine to your
Google homepage:
http://www.pbpgroup.com/Search/plus_google.gif (http://www.google.com/ig/adde?hl=en&moduleurl=http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/106831461244211549160/PicBasicPro.xml&source=imag) </td></tr></tbody></table>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/coop/cse/brand?form=cse-search-box&lang=en"></script>Unless I pay google $100 a year (ain't happening), they put adds in it. Just ignore them.

If you know of sites that you think should be included in the search for "PicBasic Pro" code, let me know.

<hr>
Just in case you got used to the old "better search tool" ... it's still here.

<!-- Search Google --><left><form method="GET" action="http://www.google.com/custom"></form></left><table border="0" cellSpacing="0" bgColor="#ffffff"><tbody><tr vAlign="top"><td>http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_40wht.gif (http://www.google.com/search)</td><td><input name="q" maxLength="255" value="" size="31" type="text"><input name="sa" value="Google Search" type="submit"><input name="cof" value="S:http://www.picbasic.co.uk/forum;AH:left;LH:37;L:http://www.crownhill.co.uk/logo.gif;LW:174;AWFID:f08c2ab0d3333e22;" type="hidden"><input name="domains" value="picbasic.co.uk" type="hidden">
<input name="sitesearch" value="" type="radio"> Search WWW <input name="sitesearch" value="picbasic.co.uk" CHECKED="" type="radio"> Search picbasic.co.uk
</td></tr></tbody></table><!-- Search Google -->

Often times the built-in vBulletin search tool gives less than desirable results, and you can spend hours searching for something that's just "Right There". It doesn't sort by relevance, and ignores words less than 4 characters in length. So if you're searching for LCD or ADC, you may never find them.

The Google "Site" search above will do a much better job.

HTH,<script type="text/javascript">var adminuser = document.getElementById("inlinemodform");if (adminuser == null) {document.write(" ");} else {document.write("

This form won't work for Admin Users.
The inlinemod form interferes with the search form");}</script>

Thanks, It could also be my idea, because I had the same problem.

Just found this thread (I don't normally look in the FAQ) and I wish I'd found it sooner. I have found the 4 letter minimum search quite difficult to use in order to obtain the answers I'm after in the past. Exactly for the reasons you listed above - who starts a post with Liquid Crystal Display problem - answer; no-one!

I have bookmarked this thread in my browser as I'm sure it will come in handy (plus I can't lose it that way!)

Cheers Darrel

Can you direct me to the instructions on starting new posts and attaching files? In the past I've only responded

I think this covers most of it ...

But if you still have questions ... feel free to ask.

Thanks again for your wonderful work.

You have made this form of programming much more available to us by your efforts. Someday, I hope to send you a basket full of money from the profits on the widget that you helped to design. ;-)

Now, if I can just figure out a way to get the PICsearch to work in my Foxfire toolbar... no, that has to wait until I get the other 112 projects off the bench.... so much code...so little time...

Thanks again so much for your work.

Mark

Thanks Mark,

Not familiar with the FireFox toolbar, but you can bookmark the following page for easy access.

Custom Search for PicBasic Pro
http://www.google.com/cse?cx=003666103979926751653%3Az4kc9dx55he

I've been working on it a little bit.
Setting "promotions" for well known and usefull threads.
It's extremely time consumming, so not very many show up yet.

But when you search for things like Configs, PID loop, USB, keypad etc, it will highlight recommended threads or webpages.

Tons of fun.
